About Beacon Housing
Beacon Housing is a registered 501(C)(3) U.S. nonprofit organization, with the vision of a caring community environment where every person can be empowered to achieve housing security and financial independence. We seek to provide safe and low-cost accommodation options and education-centered supportive services, while also driving innovative and collaborative solutions to the affordable housing crisis.
Our Core Principles
We are guided by four core principles in our work to improve access to safe and secure accommodations for all.
Education-centered
Beacon Housing strongly believes that knowledge is power, and we are proud to support those seeking to invest in their future through education. Our programming emphasizes learning both in and outside of the classroom, through working with our various community partners. Our transitional living program, Casa de Alegria, provides up to two years of lodging and referral for support for domestic violence survivors who are looking to pursue higher educational qualifications. We also host an after-school homework club at some of our facilities to promote love of learning to young children.
Faith-based
Beacon Housing was founded with the goal of spreading God’s love and following in the footsteps of Jesus Christ to serve our community. As an organization, we work to improve the quality of life for our fellow humans, with a focus on promoting their access to the basics of habitat and education.
Although we are a faith-based organization with strong roots in Christian values, we do not require religious participation from our residents. Our programs, activities and policies do not discriminate on the basis of religion, and we welcome people of all faith backgrounds who seek our services. We believe that this inclusive approach to all has been so clearly shown in the teachings of Jesus Christ, as well as in the examples of his life and the lives of His Apostles.
Caring and Compassionate
First and foremost, Beacon Housing’s approach is grounded in the basic values of care and compassion, without judgment. As an organization, we are inspired by the parable of the Good Samaritan, who showed mercy to an injured stranger he encountered, tending to his wounds and needs without regard to his background. With these values, we hope to encourage and nurture our residents to achieve their own aspirations, and move forward towards a sustainable future of housing independence.
As a policy, Beacon Housing does not discriminate on the grounds of race, color, religion (creed), gender, gender expression, age, national origin (ancestry), disability, marital status, sexual orientation, or military status, in any of our activities or operations.
Sustainable and Collaborative
The ultimate goal of Beacon Housing’s program is sustainable housing security for our residents/participants. We believe in engaging closely with our residents and community, and supporting them to break the cycle of poverty and violence they may be facing. Various components of our services and partnerships, as well as our emphasis on higher education, are designed to promote long-term viability in the job market, so as to ensure financial independence and encourage future housing independence.
We also believe that a sustainable future of housing for all means greater commitment and involvement from all members of the community, and encouraging the cross-pollination of ideas and efforts between different types of organizations including businesses, academia, government, non-profits, religious organizations, and others. To this end, we are committed to improving public-private sector partnerships, as well as to collaborating closely with other organizations within and outside the transitional and affordable housing sectors to arrive at innovative solutions to social issues.
